5 DIY Shelving Ideas

Whether for your home or your storage shed, these DIY shelving ideas will help you achieve simple and artistic shelving. We’ve included various levels of difficulty (based on a scale of 1–5, 5 being the most difficult) and each type has detailed instructions. If you’ve tried or will try any of these, we’d love to see pictures! Best of luck!

1. THE BASKET UPCYCLE

Difficulty Level: 2

This smart idea, shared by the Kim Six Fix, is simple and rewarding for the effort. Instructions and images here.

2. THE CRATE UPCYCLE

Difficulty Level: 2

One of our favorites. Looks amazing and harder than it actually is. This one takes a little more effort than the basket idea, but the visual payoff is worth it.

You can have endless fun with the configuration. Crates can be by themselves or formed into structured or abstract shapes. Search Pinterest for this one and you’ll see the ideas are as many as the people who try them.

Instructions and images for structured look here.

Abstract collage instructions and image from Mr. Kate here.

3. THE A-FRAME UPCYCLED PAIR OF CRUTCHES

Difficulty Level: 3

This one holds some potential for a meaningful story, and if you have a pair of crutches that hold so much sentimental value that you have decided against donating them, or they are an older style that would not be as useful anymore, try repurposing them into an A-frame shelf.

Instructions and images here.

4. THE PAINTER’S LADDER SHELF

Difficulty Level: 4

5 DIY shelving ideas

This one is great for tight spaces, where you need some elbow room, but can afford more real estate for the shelving near the floor. Little corners, behind doors, small closets—the uses are varied!

Instructions and more images here.

5. THE DRAWER SHELF

Difficulty Level: 2

Just a drawer on a wall—but so whimsical and sturdy-looking. Try this if you love the upcycled DIY look. We do.

Instructions and really cute images here.
